This former disused toilet block was located prominently beside the bus terminus. It had been left vacant and dilapidated for about 15 years and was destined to be demolished before BIT decided to take it on.  BIT felt that it was a building of local character that should be somehow saved and given a new purpose. The building was transferred to BIT in 2009 on a 99-year lease by Macclesfield Borough Council, and work began.

When we took over the disused toilet block, it was in a sorry state but BIT had a vision for this interesting and quirky building to bring it back to use. The building had to be completely gutted, restored and then extended and fitted with state of the art environmentally friendly features. Over £75,000 was raised to repurpose this old toilet block and turn it into a sought-after eco-friendly office and showroom. It is now back in use supporting the local community and local jobs.

Together with our partners GoLo the building was extended and completely refurbishment to create an office which included state of the art energy-saving measures including solar panels, high-grade insulation, eco-heating and triple-glazed windows. This transformation has been heralded by Historic England as a great example of how a building of local significance can be given a new and successful, long term purpose. This little building has a big impact locally by not only supporting a local business and local jobs, but also is ahead of it’s time when it comes to energy saving.
